What.cd / What — is a giant musical private tracker, founded in October 2007. It is a private BitTorrent- tracker with a huge selection of music of all genres. Every day, about 200 thousand people spread hundreds or even thousands of different kinds of music releases in a variety of formats – from simple MP3 to heavy FLAC’.

Heads up: Invites Shop no longer sells invites to this resource. Below is verified information (updated July 2026) on how things actually stand.

Status: dead since November 17, 2016 — but its heirs are very much alive

What.CD — widely considered the greatest music library in internet history — shut itself down on November 17, 2016 after French authorities seized servers at its host. The team destroyed the database and code to protect users. Its open-source engine, Gazelle, still powers most music trackers today.

The living successors — and the official way in (2026)

  • Redacted (RED) — the de-facto main heir. Note: the domain moved from redacted.ch to redacted.sh in November 2024. RED runs an official interview system: study the official prep site interviewfor.red, then join IRC irc.scratch-network.net port 6697 (SSL), channel #RED-invites, run a speedtest and queue with !queue <speedtest link>. The interview takes 1–2 hours; home direct connection only (no VPN/proxy/mobile); you get 3 attempts with 48 hours between them. Cheating means a permanent ban.
  • Orpheus.network — the second heir, also interviews: IRC irc.orpheus.network port 7000 (SSL), /join #recruitment; prep site interview.orpheus.network.

Fact

Both successors launched within days of What.CD’s death (Redacted on Nov 25, 2016; Orpheus’s ancestor on Nov 19, 2016) — the community rebuilt itself in under two weeks.
